1 Ton Slate Wagon

On display in our Museum at Glyn Ceiriog is a full-size replica of a 1 ton slate wagon used to transport cut slates both within and from the Cambrian and Wynne quarries above Glyn Ceiriog to the Shropshire Union Canal at Gledrid Wharf, later to the Great Western Railway at Chirk.

Dating from the horse-drawn era in the 1870s, the wagons numbered about forty in total.

Our replica wagon was made by Mike Rowan and his colleagues in Essex, probably the first new 2ft 4½in gauge item of rolling stock built since the early 20th century!
